June 2009 - Upper Egypt
After the JtE-3 Classroom in Giza we pack our bags,
board a Sleeper Train and ride into the Sa'idi region during the night.
We awake in a different world: we catch glimpses of the Nile, green fields and palm trees. On dusty streets men ride or lead their camels and donkeys. Women walk together,
baskets and balos balenced on their heads, on their way to market, farm or Nile.
Water buffalo walk in circles driving the ancient irrigation on the Sa'idi farms,
all in the halo of the eastern rising sun.
We check into our Luxor hotel, relax and wash up. (For our comfort in a hot land,
all our hotels in Upper Egypt will have A/C and a swimming pool.) During our
3 day stay in Luxor we will take dance classes from both Ghawazee and Sa'idi,
tour the temples of the eastern (the living) side of the Nile as well as the
tombs of the Valley of the Kings on the western setting-sun side. We have
classroom study of dance and testing out our new Dance Ethnology techniques.
The Sound and Light show at night is optional, you might want to rest instead.
The fourth day we will take a bus through the Sa'idi land into Nubia.
On the way we visit pharaonic temples, Edfu and Kom Ombo.
During the next 4 nights and 4 days in Aswan, in addition to our classroom and lab,
we have dance classes in both Kinzi and Fujeric Nubian styles
(accompanied by a live drummer), watch aNubian dance show
(or attend an actual Nubian wedding celebration) and a rehearsal at the
home of the local government dance and music troupe, the Culture Palace.
We will shop in the souq, sail in a felucca, visit Philae Temple, and
experience the beauty of Aswan.
The evening of May 22 those who are returning to Cairo will leave on the
deluxe sleeper train to arrive in Cairo the morning of May 23.
More than 40 hours of instruction in 7 days.
Pre-requisite JtE-1, JtE-2 and JtE-3
Certification upon completion.
